Earthquake Survival–This ShakeOut is a Big One
October 17th, 2012 by John Wesley Smith
This coming Thursday, October 18th, another ShakeOut earthquake drill is scheduled. At 10:18 a.m. (local time) individuals, families, schools, businesses, nonprofit organizations, governments, neighborhoods, and other groups will conduct “Drop, Cover and Hold On” drills. This is a big one. Several states and countries abroad are participating, including…
- Alaska
- Arizona
- California
- the District of Columbia
- Georgia
- Idaho
- Maryland
- Nevada
- North Carolina
- Oregon
- South Carolina
- Virginia
- Washington state
- along with British Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, Southern Italy (plus any other state or country who wants to participate!)
ShakeOut drills help people in homes, schools, and organizations practice how to be safe during big earthquakes. Everyone has the opportunity to improve their overall preparedness. When you participate, you can have peace of mind that you, your family, your co-workers and millions of others will be better prepared to survive and recover quickly from the next big earthquake wherever you live. As many as 12 million people are expected to participate in ShakeOut events this year. Each event has its own website where you can register, find tools, resources and more. Find out more about the Great ShakeOut at

Note: Each time I mention these ShakeOut drills, I hear from readers who question the effectiveness of the “drop, cover and hold” procedure during an earthquake. Watch the short video below to find out about the Triangle of Life. Then draw your own conclusions. Which method would you rather practice during an earthquake?
