What Medical Issues Might We Face After a Collapse? – Part 1

Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy paid a visit to DestinySurvival Radio this week. We began working our way through a list of the top ten issues we might face after a collapse. We concluded the list in a second show, and the post about it is linked at the bottom of this post.

Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy are a dynamic couple, well known in the prepper world. They’re energetic and passionate when it comes to teaching others about traditional and alternative medical strategies for survival in times of trouble. They’re firm believers in integrated medicine.

Dr Bones is a Medical Doctor and Nurse Amy is An Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner. As well as being preppers, they’re certified Master Gardeners.

Before we delved into medical issues, we discussed how they’re experimenting with small scale aquaponics–a combination of raising fish (aquaculture) and hydroponics.

They raise tilapia in a pond and pump fish waste water into small gravel beds. They’ve grown corn, cabbage and a few other things. Keeping it simple is their goal with the hope other preppers might be able to do something similar for themselves. I applaud their efforts.

On their own show Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy discussed the top ten medical problems we might face after a collapse. The list came from one doctor’s observations after serving 15 months overseas in an underdeveloped country. What he saw could be what we experience one day.

If we’re going to be living in a world without electricity and the other modern conveniences we take for granted, we’ll need to know how to identify and treat the medical matters that arise. Some will be serious and even deadly.

In our conversation this week we made it through the first six issues. They explained each one and gave brief solutions. We discussed…

  • Minor Musculoskeletal injuries (sprains and strains)
  • Minor trauma (cuts, scrapes)
  • Minor infections (cellulitis, “pinkeye”, urinary infections)
  • Allergic reactions
  • Respiratory infections (pneumonia, bronchitis, influenza, common colds)
  • Diarrhea (minor and major)

  1. Hi John, I enjoyed your post, as usual, and look forward to the next installment of what you discuss on this weeks radio show. I suspect there are many regional herbs and remedies that are not widely known. We have found quite by accident one such herb that most consider a noxious weed. Burdock produces a edible and nourishing root, which many people know about. But what we have discovered is that those nasty burrs that stick into all your clothing, when boiled in water make a wash (or a soaking solution) that is very soothing to the skin. Add some to your bath water for a treat or use to relieve dry, itchy skin.

I don’t know if your guests (Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy) are aware of such regional plants, but it is wise to know what grows in our own back-yard and how to make use of it. I am sorry to have to miss their appearance on your radio show.

    Ellis
