Could You Survive by Living in a Car as Some Are Now?

Survival for some means living in a car. It’s nothing new. Plenty of people have done it before. No doubt many are doing it now. Some by their own choice.

Could you survive by living in your car if circumstances forced you to?

Sometimes being down and out is temporary or a transitional phase. I’ve heard stories of some individuals who lived in their car for a time and then had stunning success later as things came together for them.

But I don’t recall hearing much about whole families living in cars.

C BS’s “60 Minutes” featured a story about families living in cars in Florida. It’s an amazing piece which you can view here.

These families may come out all right eventually. But I’m curious to know what you think. Are we starting to see the emergence of the new American peasant?

To discover how one man fared by living out of his car, get a book called Ten Consecutive Years Living In Cars, by Craig Roberts. Or for one woman’s perspective based on her experience living in cars, there’s Car Living: How to Make It a Successful, Sane, Safe Experience, by Jane Archer.

We may see a lot more people living in cars as the economy worsens. What would you do if you had to make your car your home for a time?

  1. Gerald Franz forwarded the following comment to me, which didn’t make it through the usual way for some reason. It makes a good point.

“There are people who would be grateful for the shelter of an automobile, people who live under bridges or sleep in the open.”
