Destiny Survival

            Can you believe it?  It’s already time for another installment of our little Family Survival School, where I suggest some things you can do with the whole family.  So here goes!

            This first one should appeal to you athletic types.  How about playing paintball?  Now I’ll be honest.  I’ve never done this myself, but from what I hear from those who have, this sport kicks your survival instincts and skills into gear.  You learn how to run through the brush and do things like hide and set traps.  It sounds like fun your kids would really enjoy.

            Here’s one for both bookworms and nature lovers.  Spend half of the day in the library and the second half at a local park.  When you go to the library, pick up books on edible and medicinal plants as well as local wildlife.  Then try to identify any of these plants and animals you can find at your local park or conservation area.

            Camp outside in the back yard. It’s free and it’s a fun activity for the kids. This is good practice for when you go camping at a state park or other camp site.  Make a list of things you might need, since you can’t run back inside your house when you’re at a camp site.

            One More?  Ok, this one goes along with that backyard camping or the trip to the park.  Enjoy some sort of physical activity together. Go for a long walk or ride bicycles.  Kick a soccer ball around or play basketball.  You get the idea.  Not only is it good exercise, but it’s a good way to spend time and burn off some energy, especially if you’re in a situation where there are no computers or electronic games to keep the kids occupied.  Also, my husband Survival Sam reminds me that we all may have to know how to ride a bike someday just to get around.
