Starting the Survival Garden
“We’ve decided to take your advice and start a garden for survival,” Diane said to Survival Sally. “Where do we start?”
“That’s wonderful news,” Sally said. “The first thing to do is start planning. Choose a few favorite vegetables to start with. I’d say your goal this first year would be to at least supplement the amount you already eat.”
“Is it hard to start the seeds?”
“No,” Sally said. “There are lots of seed starting kits and supplies to choose from. One I like is the Park-Starts packs from Park Seeds. The kids will enjoy using these, too. You pop little peat cylinders into ready made holes in the pack and put a seed in each cylinder. There’s a watering tray that goes underneath to help keep them moist.”
“I was thinking of ordering my seeds from Park Seeds,” said Diane. “I guess it’s time to be doing it, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it is,” Sally said. “By the time you place your order and have it in hand, it will soon be time to start some seeds. Tomatoes and peppers should be started six to eight weeks before the last frost.”
I think Jenny wants to be my garden helper,” said Diane. “I’m not so sure about Bryce yet.”
“Kids love to watch seedlings sprout and grow. I think it’s a marvelous thing myself,” said Sally. “You can go to Park’s web site from the blog page and type Park-Starts into the search box. You’ll see several items for seed starting, too. Since Park-Starts packs only hold a few seedlings, I'm sure you'll want to look at Park's Bio Domes.”
